This tutorial will show you how to downgrade macOS Tahoe to an older macOS such as Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, or Big Sur on your Apple Silicon computer (Macbook Pro, Air, iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, etc.). Downgrading macOS requires erasing and reformatting your hard drive. This means all your files will be deleted. Make sure you back up your Mac before you begin. You will also need an empty USB flash drive with enough storage space for the macOS installer file (minimum 16GB) to create a bootable macOS installer. Let's begin.

Downgrade macOS Tahoe

1. Download the macOS you want to downgrade to from the App Store. Press Get on the App Store page to download. Note: You cannot downgrade to a macOS version older than what your Mac originally came with.

2. Press Download.

3. You should see this message, "This installer cannot be used from the version of macOS you are running". This is normal because you cannot just simply install an older macOS. Press Quit.

4. Now we will create a bootable installer. Connect your USB flash drive to your computer and open Apps > Disk Utility.

5. Under External, select your USB flash drive and press Erase.

6. Name the drive "boot" (all lowercase) and press Erase. The format does not matter since the drive will be formatted again when we create our bootable installer.

7. Once it's finished, press Done.

8. Now open Terminal. You can open Apps > Terminal or search for Terminal in Spotlight Search.

9. Copy and paste the code below for the macOS version you want to downgrade to into Terminal and press Enter:

macOS Sequoia:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sequoia.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/boot

macOS Sonoma:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/boot

macOS Ventura:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Ventura.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/boot

macOS Monterey:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/boot

macOS Big Sur:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/boot

10. Enter your user password and press Enter.

11. Now type Y and press Enter.

12. Once the process is done, you can exit Terminal and shut down your computer.

13. You will now need to boot up your computer in recovery mode. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until you see this screen:

14. Open Options.

15. Open Disk Utility.

16. Select your computer's internal hard drive under Internal. It should be called Macintosh HD. If you see multiple Macintosh HD or drive's name, select any one of them. Press Erase.

17. You can keep the default name. The format should be APFS. Now press Erase Volume Group or if you do not have this option press Erase.

18. Press Erase Mac... and press Erase Mac and Restart.

19. Your computer will restart and you should see the Activate Mac page. Connect to your Wi-Fi network on the top-right corner.

20. Once your Mac is activated, press Exit to Recovery.

21. Now shut down your computer and boot up in recovery mode by pressing and holding the power button on your Mac until you see this screen:

22. Press Install macOS.

23. Select your language and press next.

24. Press Continue.

25. Agree to the terms.

26. Select the hard drive you erased in step 17 and press Continue.

That's it! Your computer should restart and you should see the setup page for the macOS you downgraded to.
